Talbaste Abrayafin, Priestess of Lolth, has tasked the party with retrieving a lesser Eye of Lolth (amulet) that was stolen by a drow sorcerer and given to the Oni Hiroshi Larina. The amulet is a powerful artifact that can be used to cast a 20th level domination spell. Hiroshi’s daughter Tatyana has fallen in love with Yevgeni oni Yegin, but he has spurned her love.
Hiroshi acquired the amulet to compel Yegin to love his daughter, but Tatyana has forbidden him to use it. Hiroshi will return the amulet to the party if they can resolve the situation between Tatyana and Yevgeni to Hiroshi’s satisfaction. The first step is to persuade Yevgeni to attend a ball to be held in the Larina household that evening.
At Oni Yegin’s uncle’s house, the party must overcome the estate’s gargoyles in order to speak with Yevgeni, who has told the estate’s servants not to admit visitors.
Once on the grounds of the estate, they can use alter self to disguise one of the party as Lensky to persuade Yevgeni to attend the ball. Hiroshi counsels them to portray the event as an intimate family gathering.
At the ball, the peevish Yegin flirts with Olga and is challenged by Tatyana.
the party is provided with cloaks that let them disguise themselves as (particular) ogres. Burndown's cloak makes him look like Lensky
the party goes to the Yegin estate. They defeat the gate gargoyles and enter to find Yevgeni in a drunken stupor on the living room floor. They haul Yevgeni onto a donkey and bring him to the Larin estate. Yegin is taken away by attendants; the party doesn't see him again until his entrance at the evening festivities
Yevgeni comes a bit late to the party. He snubs Tatiana and flirts outrageously with Olga. Lensky is getting visibly angry, when Tatiana slaps Yevgeni across the face with her glove and demands satisfaction for the insult to her honour.
Hiroshi confides to Stick his concern for his daughter's fate at the hands of an accomplished duelist from the capital. Stick offers himself as Tatiana's champion.
The next morning dawns. There is the traditional appeal to the parties to reconsider, after which the battle is joined.
Stick fires first, and hits
Yegin returns fire, but misses.
After that, things don't go as well for Stick. in six (?) rounds, Yegin hits every time, even though Stick has effective cover from the illusion that makes him look like Lensky. Stick hits twice, but it is evident that each of Yegin's wounds healed completely on the following round.
Some thoughts on ways out of this mess:
Pushkin interrupts, claiming that the duel is not being conducted according to the rules:
Onegin's arrows aren't even poisoned
neither party took the stardust (anti-regeneration) potion
Onegin's social standing is well above Lensky or Tatiana's, therefore Tatiana or her champion should be allowed the choice of weapon
